This is a very slick bar with a hotel attached, we joke; it is a hotel and, pleasingly, passes this test with flying colours too.
South Place London, the first hotel from D&D London, the restaurant group behind Floridita and Skylon. Based in in the City of London, offering arty interiors and a good choice of bars and restaurants, with huge importance placed on art and design. The bulky grey box of a building might divide opinion, but the Conran interiors – fun, stylish, and in keeping with the East London surroundings – are far less likely to offend. There are colourful pop art-inspired prints, randomly placed mannequins.
The hotel hosts DJs at the weekend and stays busy until late, while the first floor is often given over to special events. There’s also a spa offering the usual treatments, a steam room/sauna, and a large gym. Most will be satisfied by the wide comfy beds, blackout blinds, spacious and handsome marble bathrooms, and big bottles of James Heeley toiletries.
